We can help with an assessment of neck pain and stiffness. We explain the findings, care options and whether medical assessment is needed before you decide about chiropractic care.

Neck pain needs an assessment rather than an assumption about its cause. Hands-on care and exercise may be options, but the evidence has limitations and results vary.

At Kind Chiropractic in Bangsar we can help with neck pain assessment and discuss care options. Every plan starts with an assessment, including whether you need to see a doctor first.

Common Symptoms

  • Difficulty turning your head fully, for example when reversing the car
  • Stiffness when you wake up, or a neck that "locks" after sleeping
  • Aching across the neck and the tops of the shoulders
  • Headaches that start at the base of the skull
  • Pain, tingling or numbness travelling into an arm or hand
  • Neck tension that builds up after long hours at a screen

What Usually Causes It

  • Forward head posture from long hours at a laptop, tablet or phone
  • Stiff or restricted joints in the neck (cervical spine)
  • Age-related wear in the neck joints and discs (cervical spondylosis)
  • An old whiplash or sports injury that never fully settled
  • Sleeping on your stomach or on a pillow that leaves the neck unsupported
  • Muscle tension from stress

How We Can Help at Kind Chiropractic

We assess neck movement and your symptoms before discussing options. Care may include Gonstead adjustments, exercises and advice about daily activities when appropriate. You can decline neck manipulation, and medical assessment takes priority when needed.

What neck pain care at our clinic involves

Assessment first. We take a full history: when the pain started, where it sits, what eases it and what makes it worse. We then examine your posture, how far and how comfortably your neck turns, and the individual joints of the neck and upper back. If pain or tingling travels into your arm, we also check reflexes, strength and sensation. Imaging such as X-ray is only arranged when your history and examination show a clinical reason for it.

A clear explanation. Before any care you hear what we found, what we think is driving the pain, what we recommend and what results are realistic. If anything in the assessment points to a problem that needs a medical doctor first, we tell you and refer you.

Care options. We discuss the Gonstead method, potential risks, alternatives and whether neck manipulation is appropriate. You can choose not to have your neck manipulated.

Exercise and daily habits. Exercise and hands-on care may be options for neck pain, but study results vary and the evidence has limitations. We discuss suitable exercises and practical advice without promising a result.

Cervical spondylosis and age-related neck stiffness

Cervical spondylosis is the medical name for age-related wear of the discs and joints in the neck. It is very common: scans show these changes in many adults who have no neck pain at all, so a report that mentions spondylosis does not by itself explain your symptoms.

Chiropractic care cannot reverse wear in the joints. Whether hands-on care and exercise are appropriate depends on your assessment; improvement is not guaranteed. If you have spondylosis and notice symptoms such as clumsy hands, numbness or weakness in the arms or legs, or difficulty walking, these can be signs of pressure on the nerves or spinal cord and need a medical assessment first (see the warning signs below).

Neck pain from desk work and screens

Tell us how desk work and screen use affect your symptoms so we can discuss practical changes. For the full background on why necks hurt, read our guide to the causes of neck pain.

  • Raise your screen so the top sits at eye level, and lift your phone instead of dropping your head
  • Take a short movement break every 30 to 45 minutes
  • Choose a pillow that keeps your neck level with your spine, and avoid sleeping on your stomach
  • Keep the screen square in front of you rather than off to one side

Your first visit

Your first appointment is built around understanding your neck rather than rushing into care. You can book online, by phone or on WhatsApp, and you do not need a referral.

  • A detailed history and a hands-on examination
  • A plain-language explanation of what we found and what we recommend
  • Care on the same day if it is appropriate and you agree to it
  • Exercises and advice to start at home straight away

When to see a doctor first

Some neck pain needs medical attention before any chiropractic care. Please see a doctor, or call 999 in an emergency, if your neck pain:

  • Started after a significant fall, road accident or blow to the head or neck
  • Comes with fever, a severe headache, or a stiff neck you cannot bend forward
  • Comes on suddenly and severely together with dizziness, double vision, slurred speech, trouble swallowing or a drooping face
  • Comes with progressive weakness, numbness or clumsiness in the arms or legs, or difficulty walking
  • Comes with new problems controlling your bladder or bowels
  • Comes with unexplained weight loss, or you have a history of cancer

Questions about chiropractic care for neck pain

Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor for neck pain?

No. You can book directly with us. If your assessment shows that you need a medical doctor or a specialist first, we will tell you and refer you.

Is it safe to have my neck adjusted?

Neck manipulation is not risk-free. Temporary soreness, stiffness or increased pain can occur; serious neurological problems and strokes have also been reported. Neck manipulation has been associated with cervical artery tears, although whether it causes them is disputed. Screening cannot guarantee safety. Discuss risks and alternatives before deciding, and tell us about dizziness, recent injury, medical conditions and medicines. [5]

How many sessions will I need for neck pain?

The number of visits and the outcome cannot be guaranteed. We review whether care is helping and discuss medical referral if it is not.

Can chiropractic help cervical spondylosis?

Chiropractic care cannot reverse joint wear. We can discuss whether care and exercise are appropriate, but cannot promise relief. Signs of nerve or spinal cord pressure need a medical assessment first.

What should I bring to my first visit?

Any recent scans or reports about your neck, a list of your medications, and comfortable clothing. If you are not sure whether a document is relevant, bring it.

Ready to get relief?
